Imagine this: you come home to an empty fridge, as in there is nothing ready to eat, and you decide to cook something for yourself. It has been a while since you had a home-cooked meal, and you think to yourself that maybe it is time to put something together. What is the first thing you do? You go online, don’t you? Pull up chef Google and start searching for a recipe. And not any kind of recipe, but a simple recipe. After all, you are no chef, and you do not want to spend too much time cooking either.
A French cookbook is what everyone will tell you it is. You have to admit that there are so many stereotypes out there about French cooking. But you know what? Those stereotypes are true. You will indeed find delicious recipes. Well, delicious after the book’s standards, not your cooking. And who knows, maybe if you get yourself the best French cookbook, maybe you will discover you have a new passion. You will not know until you try.
Why you should buy a French cookbook?
Since chef Google is a famous kitchen lord, you would think that a cookbook is useless. Allow me to disagree. While you can find on Google pretty much what you want, you will never have the same experience. Believe me, I was just like you. My searches always included ‘easy chicken recipes.’ You know…because chicken cooks faster than any other meat, except for fish, and you have no idea how to prepare a meal. But, there are still reasons to buy a French cookbook.
- They have not become obsolete – against all common misconceptions, people still buy cookbooks. I guess you wonder why. Well, you have no way of remembering, but when the TV was invented, people said that the radio will become obsolete. Has it? Of course not. People have this nostalgic need to do things a certain way. It is just like that with a cookbook. It one thing to take out chef Google, and it is another to pour yourself a glass of wine and go through recipes in a French cookbook.
- They are more than cookbooks – nowadays, the cookbooks are not what they used to be. Before, if you were looking for a recipe, you looked at the table of contents, gathered the ingredients, and started working. However, a modern cookbook is so much more. You will also find stories and people who had all kinds of experiences. Of course, they are related to cooking, food, or wine. The point is that you get more than a few ingredients put together. You get a story, and I think that is lovely as hell.
- You can learn a lot – as I said earlier, a cookbook is not just a cookbook anymore. One of the other things that I find interesting is that you can learn and something else other than cooking. For example, there are cookbooks that will teach you food culture depending on which recipe you are interested in. I do not know about you, maybe you are not interested in this kind of thing, but I love learning new and fascinating Not only about cooking, about everything. You could say now that I can learn that from Google. After all, Google is whatever you want it to be. That is true. But you know why that does not apply? Because I will not come one day from work and suddenly do research on food culture in 1800 India. That is the difference between Google and a cookbook.
- You will learn to cook unique recipes – another difference between an online search and a cookbook is that the latter provides not-so-common recipes. Online, you find pretty much the same recipe on all cooking sites. Yes, you can watch Gordon Ramsay on Youtube. Actually, that guy is pretty good. I once made his ribs and could not get enough. Anyway, the point is that for once you will cook something more genuine. I do not know if you are allowed, grammatically speaking, to put a ‘more’ before genuine, but you catch my drift.
Why a French cookbook?
There are so many cuisines out there that you may wonder why go for a French cookbook. It is a good question. But I have two reasons why I love French cuisine. One is crepes. If you have not had them at least once in your life, you will have lived for nothing. I am not talking about the street-cart crepes. I mean authentic French crepes. I had them multiple times, and meanwhile, I perfected my crepes-cooking technique. I cannot make them as good as a French chef can, but I am getting closer the more I make them.
And two, I love the French style of cooking. They always have tasty recipes, their food is healthier than the American cuisine, and the food looks colorful. It is incredibly appealing. When I go through a French cookbook, which now has pictures, of course, I am this close of drooling like my dog when she sees me eat something.
Oh, one other thing I learned from French cookbooks is how to pair up wines with food. They have a lot of info on wine. Of course they would. They are French. That is where the wine was born. You may find this silly, but it is useful to learn which wine goes with which food. It is not crucial, but when you go to a fancy restaurant, at least you do not ask red wine for your white fish. That is just embarrassing. Etiquette may not peek your interest, but it does mine.
How to choose the best French cookbook
Choosing a French cookbook can be as tricky as cooking what is in it. That is because there is a million of them. Ok, maybe not a million, but you get my point. That is why you should select the book following some simple criteria. If you have no idea what that is, just read the info below and see what you need to consider before buying a French cookbook.
- Your level of skill – not all of us is advanced cooks, which is why you need a French cookbook that is meant for beginners, advanced, or experts, according to what your general knowledge on cooking is. However, you can ever go wrong with a cookbook written for everybody. The author usually realizes that famous chefs do not buy cookbooks, which is why they write a book for everyone.
- Your preferences – there are French cookbooks specialized on a specific category of recipes. For example, you can buy a cookbook just for desserts, or one that will teach you how to cook just fish. If you are interested in a particular category, search to see if you find the best French cookbook for you.
- Never go kindle – while buying books for Kindle is very popular now, my opinion is that doing so beats the whole purpose of a cookbook. After all, don’t you want to cook reading a real book? If you are feeling guilty about a tree dying for your book, just plant a tree and get over it. The real thing is the best.
- Hardcover paperback – while this does not really matter, I thought that I should mention that a hardcover is usually to be preferred. You are in the kitchen, after all, and cookbooks get a lot of abuse. A hardcover will protect the content a lot better. At the end of the day, it is entirely up to you.

If you take a look online, you will see countless cookbooks. Some are good, and some are not. Not all writers can actually write a cookbook. And not all chefs are good teachers. That is a fact. However, you find the best French cookbook for you, you need to take into account the considerations above. I do not know about you, but when I see an author that actually writes stuff about food regularly, I feel more confident about the book itself. At least she knows what she is doing. She is a journalist for French TV in California, so she must know a thing or two about cooking.
This book is meant for people of all skill levels. The recipes are not too difficult. You can learn to make both food and desserts, and the pictures inside will make you want to work harder. You want that result. Also, the recipes are traditional, so you do not need fancy kitchenware or hard to find ingredients. I am sure that if you buy this book, you will do just fine. The book is paperback so you may want to take care of it while you cook.
My Paris Kitchen: Recipes and Stories by David Lebovitz
David Lebovitz is a pretty famous pastry chef. He is American, but he lives in Paris, France. As a pastry chef, you can rest assured that he knows his way around a kitchen. This cookbook of his is very popular online. Thousands of people bought it and learned a lot from it. His recipes are absolutely delicious, and you may fight to stop your mouth from watering just by looking at the pictures.
Just because David Lebovitz is a pastry chef, it does not mean you will find only recipes for pastry. There are wonderful gourmet food recipes, as well as desserts. Furthermore, along with the recipes, you will have the chance of reading some of the author’s fascinating stories about his life as a chef in Paris. I am not going to reveal anything, but let you discover by yourself. There are no spoilers here.
French Country Cooking: Meals and Moments from a Village in the Vineyards by Mimi Thorisson
Last but not least, this book is a little bit similar to the previous one. It also consists of both recipes and stories. The author is a French cooking show in France, and she has a food blog, so you do not have to worry that her recipes are from the internet. She is actually a pretty good cook, but she cooks only for her family.
The recipes in this book are for beginners as well as for advanced. You should have no issues in finding the ingredients. The best thing about this book is that the author is very funny, and you will really enjoy her stories. I am sure of it.
I am a fan of all three cookbooks, but my favorite is the French Country Cooking: Meals and Moments from a Village in the Vineyards by Mimi Thorisson. She may not be a famous chef, but her recipes are easy, she knows how to guide you through them, and she has a lovely sense of humor. I think hers is one of the best French cookbooks ever written. I highly recommend it.
Before I bought my first French cookbook, I was very skeptic about it. I had never owned cookbooks in my life. I underestimated them. However, that changed with my first book.
